USTR Targets Nicaragua, and the Premium Cigar Industry May Face Serious Consequences

As a premium cigar lover, I love finding great blends, supporting good people, and enjoying the culture that brings us all together. But every once in a while, politics barges into the humidor — and this week is one of those moments we simply can’t ignore.

On October 20, 2025, the Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR) formally announced that Nicaragua’s human rights and labor abuses “burden or restrict U.S. commerce.” In response, the USTR is weighing some major trade actions — including tariffs up to 100% on Nicaraguan imports and even the possible suspension of Nicaragua’s CAFTA-DR trade benefits.

Let me translate that into cigar terms:
If these penalties move forward, the U.S. cigar consumer is going to feel it. Hard. $$$

Why This Matters to Everyday Cigar Smokers

Nicaragua has become one of the world’s most important premium cigar producers. A massive share of the cigars you and I love — from boutiques to big-brand staples — are rolled there. So if tariffs hit or CAFTA-DR gets suspended, it could trigger:

  • Higher retail prices
  • Disruption in supply chains
  • Reduced inventories for U.S. shops
  • Pressure on factories, farmers, and rollers

And remember — premium cigars weren’t specifically mentioned in the USTR’s report. We’re basically caught in the blast radius of a much bigger geopolitical issue.

Why We Can’t Assume “Honduras Will Save Us”

Some folks might think Honduras becomes the safety valve. And yes — brands with major Honduran operations might pick up slack in the short term. But the picture isn’t that simple.

Let’s talk about a few real examples:

  • JRE Tobacco / Aladino (Eiroa Family) — The Eiroas are one of the great Honduran tobacco families, with deep roots in Jalapa and the Jamastrán Valley. If the industry is disrupted, Honduras might see increased demand — but that also means higher strain on farms, factory time, and logistics. Plus, if tariffs expand or supply chains tighten, no neighboring country is truly insulated.
  • CLE and Asylum — Also heavily invested in Honduras, these brands could see both opportunity and instability depending on how retailers shift their buying power.
  • Plasencia, Rocky Patel, and others with dual-country operations — Even companies with Honduran production rely on Nicaraguan leaf, factories, or shared logistic pipelines.

So while Honduras — including the Eiroa family’s incredible operations — may remain steady from a manufacturing standpoint, this is still a storm that could spread across the region.

CRA Is Stepping In — And We Need to Back Them

The USTR has opened a formal Request for Comment through November 19. That means this is the window — right now — where the cigar world can make its voice heard.

Cigar Rights

Cigar Rights of America (CRA) has already announced they will fight for premium cigars to be excluded from any penalties. They will be engaging USTR leadership, Congress, and the committees that oversee trade.

This is exactly why organizations like CRA matter. Times like this are when it becomes crystal clear: if we don’t show up together, decisions get made without us.

If you enjoy premium cigars and believe in protecting this culture, I’m asking you — as a fellow hobbyist — to support the groups fighting on our behalf:

  • Join or donate to CRA
  • Stay informed
  • Write during the comment period
  • Support shops and brands caught in the crossfire

We can’t control foreign governments, but we can make sure American cigar consumers, small businesses, and factory workers aren’t collateral damage.

Final Thought

I love this industry and hobby. I love the craft, the heritage, and the people behind every cigar we light up. And I don’t want to see politics — especially politics far outside the cigar world — wipe out years of growth, quality, and passion.

This situation is serious. It’s real. And it’s happening right now.
Let’s pay attention. Let’s stand up. And let’s protect the premium cigar community we care about.

More updates to come as the story develops.
