L’Atelier Côte d’Or 2019 and Surrogates Backline: Two Limited-Run Beauties Drop Next Week

Heads up, cigar lovers—two highly anticipated limited releases are landing in humidors next week, and they’re the kind of drops that don’t stick around for long.

First up is a refined return of an L’Atelier classic, Côte d’Or, back for the first time since 2017. Then there’s the gritty new kid on the block: Surrogates Backline, a guitar amp-inspired pair of smokes that blend tobacco craftsmanship with vintage tube amp vibes. Let’s break them down.

L’Atelier Côte d’Or 2019 – Toro Time for a Classic

The Côte d’Or first hit the scene in 2015 as a Churchill and again in 2017. But for this 2019 iteration—named for the year it was originally supposed to drop—we’re getting a 6 x 50 Toro, and it just might be the best format yet.

Wrapped in that signature dark Sancti Spiritus leaf you’d recognize from the Selection Spéciale line, this smoke brings in the mystical Pelo de Oro leaf in the filler, a rare and rich varietal that adds depth and intrigue.

Flavor-wise, expect a medium-bodied profile that layers chocolate, cedar, baking spice, and a touch of raisiny sweetness on the finish. There’s a refined richness here—complex but never overpowering.

Côte d’Or 2019 Specs:

  • Wrapper: Sancti Spiritus (Ecuador)
  • Binder: Nicaragua
  • Filler: Nicaragua (featuring Pelo de Oro)
  • Size: 6 x 50 Toro (soft box press)
  • MSRP: $18 per cigar
  • Production: 1,500 boxes of 10 (15,000 cigars total)

Pro Tip: If you’re a fan of previous Côte d’Ors or a Sancti Spiritus aficionado, this one belongs in your humidor—fast.

Surrogates Backline – First in the Amp Series

Here’s where things get creative. Surrogates Backline isn’t just another edgy blend from L’Atelier—it’s the start of a new series inspired by guitar amps. Yes, amps.

It all started when Dan (from the Surrogates crew) noticed that a vacuum tube from his guitar amp resembled the “fuma” heads used on some cigars. That spark of inspiration turned into the Backline Amp Box: a mixed 20-count box featuring two vitolas that play like pre-amp and power tubes.

Both cigars use the same blend—Habano Rosado wrapper over Nicaraguan binder and fillers—but the larger size (EL554) gets a touch more leaf with a slightly higher priming.

The flavor profile is medium-full with a bold yet balanced groove: think earth, toasted nuts, red pepper, and a bit of that gritty, mid-range sweetness that Dan described as “amp tone with a little grit.”

Surrogates Backline Specs:

  • Wrapper: Habano Rosado (Ecuador)
  • Binder: Nicaragua
  • Filler: Nicaragua
  • Sizes:
    • EL454: 4 x 54 ($9.50)
    • EL554: 5 x 54 ($10.00)
  • Packaging: Mixed boxes of 20 (10 of each size)
  • Production: 1,000 boxes (20,000 cigars total)

Heads up: This is just Volume 1 of the Amp Series. New blend, new tone next year.

Shipping Alert: Both begin landing at select retailers next week.

If your shop is an L’Atelier or Surrogates supporter, get on the horn and reserve your box. These aren’t going to sit on shelves for long.
