J.C. Newman Expands the Yagua Family With a New Robusto
J.C. Newman Cigar Co. is adding a new size to one of the most distinctive cigars in its portfolio. The Yagua Robusto measures 5 x 56 and delivers the same rustic blend, unusual appearance, and old-world production method in a shorter, broader format.
As someone who already enjoys Yagua, this release immediately caught my attention. Its rich flavor is part of the appeal, but the cigar’s irregular shape and the traditional process used to create it are what make the experience genuinely different.

Inspired by Cigars Made in 1940s Cuba
Yagua traces its origins to the childhood memories of Lazaro Lopez, general manager of J.C. Newman’s PENSA factory in Nicaragua.
Lopez remembered the cigars his grandfather made on the family’s tobacco farm in Cuba during the 1940s. Rather than placing the freshly rolled cigars into conventional molds or presses, his grandfather bundled them together while they were still wet and wrapped the bundle tightly inside a yagua—a leaf from the royal palm.
As the cigars dried together inside the palm leaf, they pressed against one another and developed their wonderfully inconsistent shapes. J.C. Newman recreates that process at PENSA, which means no two finished Yagua cigars look exactly alike.
That rustic appearance isn’t a construction mistake. It is the entire point.
A Difficult Cigar to Produce
Yagua is made with an underfermented Connecticut Broadleaf wrapper and a filler blend handled differently from those used in conventional premium cigar production.
“Yagua is a difficult cigar to roll because we use an underfermented Connecticut Broadleaf wrapper, blend the filler tobaccos differently, and do not use the usual tools and techniques of a cigar factory,” said Drew Newman, fourth-generation owner of J.C. Newman Cigar Co.
Because the Broadleaf wrapper is not fully fermented before rolling, J.C. Newman ages the completed cigars for an additional year.

Why This Release Matters
The 5 x 56 format should offer a different expression of the Yagua blend. Its broader ring gauge provides more room for filler tobacco, while the shorter length may allow the cigar to reach its richer flavors more quickly than longer sizes.
[likely] Smokers should expect the new Robusto to preserve Yagua’s signature rustic appearance, although its exact shape will naturally vary from cigar to cigar because of the palm-leaf bundling process.
For existing Yagua fans, this is an easy release to get excited about. I already love the cigar’s flavor, but I also enjoy opening the palm-leaf bundle and seeing how each cigar has taken on its own shape. At $10.50, the Robusto offers another accessible way to experience a cigar that looks, feels, and smokes unlike almost anything else on the shelf.
