Remembering Glenn Wolfson, the Steady Hand Behind Drew Estate’s Biggest Decade

The premium cigar industry lost one of its steadiest leaders. Glenn Wolfson, Chief Executive Officer of Drew Estate, passed away in late June at the age of 70. Drew Estate announced his passing on June 29.

Wolfson was not the face of Drew Estate — he never tried to be. He joined the company in 2016 after a 34-year career in management consulting, and for the next decade he did the quiet work that let the loud parts of Drew Estate stay loud: strengthening operations, deepening the company’s commitment to its retail partners, and helping position Drew Estate among the largest premium cigar manufacturers in the world without sanding off the culture that made it different.

“Glenn loved Drew Estate, its people, its brands, its culture and the broader premium cigar community,” the Drew Estate Executive Team said in a joint statement. “He was a transformational leader, a trusted partner and a deeply valued friend. He challenged all of us to think bigger, lead with discipline, protect what makes Drew Estate special and build this company to last.”

Founder and President Jonathan Drew put it more personally: “While Glenn’s talents in business, operations, and general commercial practices drove the company to new heights, his influence as a people person was his separate-amongst-equals… his superpower. He instinctively knew how to bring out the strengths in others while mentoring them through their challenges.”

According to halfwheel, Wolfson had shared a pancreatic cancer diagnosis with his team in May. Drew Estate says its Executive Team will continue leading the company until a new chief executive is appointed.

Every Liga Privada, Undercrown, and Acid that reached a shelf over the past ten years passed through systems Glenn Wolfson built and relationships he protected. That is a legacy most smokers will never see — which is probably how he would have wanted it.

Broward Cigar Board extends its condolences to the Wolfson family, to Jonathan Drew, and to the entire Drew Estate family.
