Inside Selected Tobacco’s New Madrid Home: Five Stories, 24 Aging Rooms and the Alfonso Awards

The most revealing room in Selected Tobacco’s new Madrid headquarters may be one designed to let time do its work. Across a wood-lined aging complex, cigars continue a journey that founder Nelson Alfonso considers central to their character. The company’s new home gives that patient process a prominent place.
Selected Tobacco welcomed guests from the premium cigar industry on October 10 and 11, 2026, to open its five-story, 3,000-square-meter facility in Spain’s capital. Tobacco processing, a germination laboratory, production and design spaces, and a 24-room aging complex now share one address.
A building shaped by the process
The opening began with a tour on October 10. Visitors saw the many disciplines behind a portfolio that includes Atabey, Byron, Alfonso, Bandolero and Nelson. Bringing them together gives the company a physical expression of its approach to tobacco, making, aging and presentation.

The laboratory offers a vivid counterpoint to the aging rooms. Under bright grow lights, guests stood among living tobacco plants. Elsewhere in the building, warm wood and orderly rows of doors emphasize the slower, more controlled part of the work.
Where patience becomes part of the process
Selected Tobacco has long emphasized post-roll aging. Its 24-room complex makes that commitment visible on an architectural scale. The tour also offered a close look at barrels in the aging area and hospitality spaces that reflect the elaborate presentation associated with Alfonso’s brands.

“This facility represents our commitment to the future of premium cigars.”
From facility tour to industry celebration
On October 11, the opening moved from the headquarters to a formal gala. Live music and a flamenco performance brought a distinctly Spanish character to the evening. The Alfonso Awards then recognized retailers and media whose work connects the cigar industry with its audience.

A five-year vision made tangible
“This is something we envisioned five years ago, and seeing it become a reality is incredibly meaningful,” Alfonso said in the company’s announcement. He described the facility as a place to keep learning and improving, with an ambition to build something lasting.
The new headquarters gathers research, production, design and long-term aging under one roof. The opening weekend also made room to recognize the retail and media partners who carry the story beyond Madrid. For Florida readers, Corona Cigar Co.’s Top Selling Store Award offers a local connection to that international celebration.
