DON PEPIN -VINTAGE EDITION TORO

My Father Cigars released the Don Pepin – Vintage Edition line as a TAA 2023 cigar which also commemorates the 20th Anniversary of the Don Pepin line. The line includes three sizes, the Toro reviewed here, a Robusto, and a Gordo. The cigar is draped in a Corojo 99 leaf wrapper, with binder and fillers from Nicaragua making this blend a puro.

Weighing in at a hefty 20 grams, the Don Pepin Vintage Edition Toro immediately presents itself with a musty, earthy aroma emanating from the wrapper. The foot reveals a more complex profile, reminiscent of cooking spices, fresh tobacco, and a subtle hint of grass. Visually, the wrapper showcases a medium caramel hue with noticeable veins, giving the cigar a rustic charm that feels quite substantial in hand.

The maroon, cream, and gold accents on the band perfectly complement the wrapper’s color, adding an elegant yet understated touch. The band itself is simple but refined, proudly displaying “Don Pepin” alongside its Nicaraguan origin. A gold foot band provides an extra pop of sophistication.

The cigar’s construction is impeccable, with a solid triple cap that offers a reassuring firmness when pressed. There are no soft spots and my sample did have a blemish in the wrapper.

On the cold draw, the cap delivers a slight tingle on the lips, though the flavor is subtle. The draw is a bit snug, hinting at the tight fill to come.

First Third: As soon as the flame touches the foot, the cigar exudes a pleasant aroma. The first few draws bring forth a distinct vegetal pepper note, with a retrohale that is smooth, leaving no harshness or irritation. The ash is a clean, light grey, and though the burn line starts a bit wavy, it remains consistent. However, there is some minor swelling in the wrapper just above the combustion line, and a slight lifting at the seams becomes noticeable.

Smoke production is modest at first, requiring two to three puffs to generate a satisfying amount of smoke—likely due to the snug draw and tight fill. Around the one-inch mark, the flavors become more pronounced, with the finish lengthening slightly.

Second Third: The ash drops cleanly after the first inch, and with it, the draw opens up. Smoke production noticeably improves, and the flavor remains steady—still delivering a strong, vegetal pepper profile, akin to a red or green pepper varietal. The ash is remarkably firm, staying intact even when it falls to the floor in one piece. This improvement in airflow enhances the smoking experience significantly.

Despite a brief rest in the ashtray, the cigar remains lit—a testament to the high-quality tobacco and excellent combustion. The flavors maintain their consistency, with a medium-bodied profile and a faint sweetness on the finish that lingers pleasantly.

Final Third: As the cigar progresses, it continues to burn flawlessly, with no issues in draw or combustion. Smoke production has reached an optimal level, and the flavor remains true to its earlier profile, delivering a sweet warmth on the finish. The strength stays comfortably in the medium range, offering enough body to satisfy without overwhelming the senses. It’s the kind of cigar that pairs beautifully with a glass of fine rum or a rich cup of coffee, making for a relaxed, enjoyable smoking experience.

Final Thoughts: The Don Pepin Vintage Edition Toro is a well-crafted, medium-full strength cigar that combines elegant design with robust flavors. It offers a consistent peppery profile balanced with subtle sweetness, and the construction holds up under scrutiny. Smoke production starts slow but improves with time, and the cigar’s ability to remain lit even after long rests is a sign of excellent craftsmanship. This Toro is perfect for a leisurely afternoon smoke, especially when enjoyed with your favorite pairing.

At $15, the Vintage Edition is not a daily smoke but definetely one I would keep in the humidor when my desire for Corojo 99 needs satiating.
