BREAKING: FDA Officially Reclassifies Premium Cigars as Vegetables
We never thought we’d say this, but — the FDA finally got one right.
In a stunning reversal of decades of regulatory policy, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced this morning that premium handmade cigars will be officially reclassified as vegetables, effective immediately.

“Tobacco is a plant,” said a spokesperson in a statement that rocked Washington. “We looked into it. It’s definitely a plant. Vegetables are plants. The math checks out.”
The ruling means premium cigars will now be governed by the USDA’s dietary guidelines rather than FDA tobacco regulations, effective April 1, 2026.
What This Means for Enthusiasts
Under the new classification, premium handmade cigars will qualify as a daily recommended serving of vegetables. The FDA has suggested a serving size of one to two cigars per day, ideally paired with a proper rest, a comfortable chair, and a beverage of your choosing.
Cigar lounges across the country are expected to be reclassified as wellness centers. Humidors may qualify as produce storage.
Walk-in bumpers are already being updated.
The Industry Responds
Reaction from the premium cigar world was swift.
“We’ve been saying tobacco is a leaf for years,” said one longtime blender who asked not to be named. “Leaves come from plants. Plants are vegetables. Honestly, I’m surprised it took this long.”
Several major manufacturers have already begun updating their packaging with the USDA Organic seal and a small illustration of a head of lettuce.
Rocky Patel reportedly wept.
What About MSRP?
Under the reclassification, premium cigars may also qualify for EBT coverage, though the FDA noted this “remains under review.” Several retailers have already begun accepting vegetable coupons on a good-faith basis.
Prices are expected to remain exactly the same because the industry is what it is.
